The telltale signs of aging are jowl and neck laxity, sagging under the eyes, saggy brow lines, and intensified nasolabial creases. One of the most effective skin treatments for these areas is Syneron's Skin Tightening (ST) ReFirme treatment. At Lakes Dermatology, we have performed over 25,000 ST procedures since the technology was created just a few years ago. This FDA-approved treatment uses deep bi-polar radio frequency and light energies to heat the dermal tissue that has collagen loss, to stimulate new collagen production and produce a firming effect in lax skin. Other skin tightening treatments (like Thermage or Titan) are time and treatment-intensive (most of these types treatments need to be done under anesthesia for full effects) and often too painful for many patients. With the ST, you can have tight, firm skin without surgery. Most often this treatment is incorporated with other procedures, such as the FotoFacial, and when this option is selected, the ST is offered at significantly reduced prices. The ST can also be done as a stand-alone treatment series and still have substantial results.
What is Skin Tightening (ST) ReFirme and what does it do?
The ST is a safe and effective industry-leading medical aesthetic technology. This treatment combines bi-polar radio frequency and infrared light energies to precisely heat the dermal tissue within the targeted treatment area. The precise heating ensures a safe, effective, fast treatment with no downtime. By remodeling the dermal layer of the skin and stimulating new collagen growth, fine wrinkles are reduced, noticeable lifting can be observed on sagging skin, and the texture of your skin becomes smoother, more luminous and toned.

Skin Tightening treatments need to be done as a series, usually of five treatments. Your initial treatments will be done every 3-4 weeks. After that, maintenance treatments are recommended every 3-6 months to maintain the effects. These maintenance treatments will be offered at reduced rates.
What areas are treated with ST?
Most patients opt to have either the full face or the full face and neck treated with ST. Skin Tightening treatments can also be done on other areas of the body, such as the chest, arms, stomach, or buttocks for additional lifting and smoothing. Sometimes it is incorporated with other treatments like mesotherapy for added benefits for targeted body areas.
What is an ST treatment like?
Before you begin ST treatments, you will discuss the procedure with Dr. Rueckl or one of the certified technicians, sign a consent, and if desired, take pre-treatment photos. Prior to your treatment a topical numbing cream will be applied to the area being treated to reduce any associated discomfort. Many offices charge extra for topical anesthetics but we have always believed that your comfort should come first, so we include this at no charge for any procedures in our offices. The topical cream is kept on for about 15-20 minutes.
To perform the treatment, your technician will use the Syneron system and ST treatment applicator. A cold conductive gel will be applied and the area will be pre-treated with a cold air chiller. Not only will this make the treatment less painful, but cooling the top layers of skin allows the RF to penetrate deeper into the skin, further heating the underlying areas to create new collagen. Some offices do not do this step of the treatment, but the clinical papers show that it does yield more effective treatments. The treatment tip will be dragged through the cold gel and pulses will be targeted into the appropriate areas. Multiple passes will be done to each area for the best results. There should not be a significant amount of pain, but some areas of the body may be more sensitive than others. At worst, each pulse should have what can be compared to a rubberband snap in the most sensitive areas, which tend to be the spots closer to the bone, like the jawline and forehead. Never should you feel so much pain that the procedure is intolerable. ST treatments usually take an hour for a full face, including the pre-numbing time.
When the area has been fully treated, your technician will apply hydrocortisone to any needed sites. Also, sunscreen will be applied to any exposed areas.
What kind of results can I expect from an ST treatment?
Your skin may appear slightly red or warm for a few hours after the treatment, similar to a light sunburn. Rash-like mild edema or erythmia may be present. You can apply hydrocortisone to these sites. Makeup can be applied immediately after a treatment and you can resume any normal activities. There is no downtime with this procedure.
You should have realistic expectations and remember that multiple treatments are needed. Over the course of your treatments, and after as collagen continues to develop for a few months, you should notice a lifting and tightening of lax skin in the treated areas and smoother, toned skin with better texture.
How much does ST cost?
ST treatments are normally done in a package of five treatments. Treatments for the face begin at $2,500 for a package. If you elect to have a package of FotoFacial and ST treatments done together, your ST package price will be significantly reduced from the normal $2,500 price. Additional areas, such as the neck, can be added for an additional fee. Prices for other body parts, or those done in conjuction with VelaShape treatments, will need to be priced during a free consulation. After you have completed an initial package of five treatments, maintenance ST treatments are offered at significantly reduced prices.
Our prices are based upon our technicians' high level of experience, the care you receive, our value-added benefits, the direct supervision of a Board-certified dermatologist, and the consumable costs for our treatments. While other offices may offer different pricing structures, we are confident that you will not receive the same level of care from any other facility.
