RADIESSE®

radiesse logoLong-lasting fillers can be used for correcting wrinkles, enhancing facial contours, or rebuilding facial volume loss due to atrophy and aging. RADIESSE is a safe dermal filler that does more than just fill in lines and wrinkles – it volumizes and helps create collagen. It is also the longest lasting filler that Dr. Rueckl uses, lasting a year or more in many areas.

Dr. Rueckl has always been the only injector of RADIESSE at Lakes Dermatology. He has never delegated this responsibility to a Physician Assistant, Nurse, Medical Assistant, or anyone else. This fact is important to the integrity of his practice and to his patients' consistent care and his high patient return rate.

What is RADIESSE and what does it do?

RADIESSE, formerly known as Radiance, is an FDA-approved wrinkle treatment from Bioform Medical. RADIESSE is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in an aqueous gel carrier—in Radiesse Box withSyringesome ways it is similar to components found in bone. This compound allows RADIESSE to last longer than other fillers—in many cases a year or longer—because it actually stimulates the body to create new collagen at its injection sites. Typically, it is not as soft feeling as other fillers, but it lasts a great deal longer.

Most often, Dr. Rueckl elects to use RADIESSE only on patients who have already tried fillers before. There is no corrective dissolving agent for RADIESSE once it has been injected into the skin. If patients are truly unhappy with a hyaluronic acid filler (like JUVEDERM or Restylane, or if an error has been made with an injection,) the filler itself can be destroyed with the injection of Vitrase/hyaluronidase. This is not the case with RADIESSE, and thus, it should only be used by patients who are certain they will like the filler for its entire duration. For the avid dermal filler patient, RADIESSE is a great choice and has the longest lifespan.

Where is RADIESSE used?

RADIESSE is injected by Dr. Rueckl to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth, such as nasolabial folds, and is used to create volume in the upper cheeks and chin/jowl area. Due to its unique components, RADIESSE must be injected deeper than other dermal fillers. It should never be injected into shallow sites, such as the lips or tear tracts, because its whitish coloring may be seen through thinner skin. Depending upon the site of injection and your specific volume loss, multiple syringes may be needed for full effects.

Why is RADIESSE different than other fillers?

radiessecosmetic surgery fillerRADIESSE lasts longer than other fillers—in most cases a year or longer—because it actually stimulates the body to create new collagen at its injection sites and it has a similar component to those found in human bone. It is not made of hyaluronic acid, like many other dermal fillers, and it has no corrective dissolving agent. Once it has been injected, it will stay until your body absorbs it entirely.

RADIESSE is biocompatible and of non-animal origin. Since it is not created from an animal source, there is little chance of allergic reaction and no testing is required prior to injection.

As with other fillers, RADIESSE is gradually absorbed naturally into the body. However, unlike hyalruonic or collagen fillers, RADIESSE's collagen-generating properties may exist long after the plumping filler substance has been absorbed. These properties will not be noticeable to the patient, but they do allow follow-up treatments to perform better and last longer, as the new injectable already has a compound with which to bond.

Depending on your desires and the areas you want injected, Dr. Rueckl can help you decide if RADIESSE is the right filler for your needs through a free consultation.

What is a RADIESSE treatment like?

As with all filler injections, RADIESSE is only injected by Dr. Rueckl. He will begin by discussing the treatment with you and have you sign a consent for the procedure. Dr. Rueckl will prep the site with a lidocaine/epinephrine block to further reduce any pain or discomfort during the procedure and have you wait about 10 minutes. By waiting this amount of time, the blood flow to that area is able to dissipate a bit, resulting in less bruising and swelling. After about 10 minutes, Dr. Rueckl will administer the RADIESSE syringe and expertly and artistically inject the substance into the areas to be filled and re-volumized. Some minor manipulation and massaging may be necessary to mold the deeper injectable into place, but this should only be done by Dr. Rueckl and should not be done after you leave the office. Dr. Rueckl will apply ice packs to the injected areas and have you sit for a few minutes to apply pressure, thereby minimizing swelling and bruising. The full procedure should take approximately 45 minutes. You will leave the office having minimal discomfort or other affects and be able to return to normal activities.

What kind of results can I expect from a RADIESSE treatment?

You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas (normally 1-2 days) with some bruising or swelling. Sometimes bruising and swelling can be minimized by taking Arnica pills, using Arnica radiesseold woman injectedgel, or applying Arnica gel pads post procedure. Arnica is a natural medication that can be obtained from a local health foods store. It is not necessary to take it, but some people find it helpful, particularly if they are prone to bruising. Because RADIESSE is injected deeper into the skin, some patients experience slightly more bruising or swelling than they do with other fillers; however, ice packs and avoidance of aspirin for a few days will help should you encounter either of these. RADIESSE will help fill, smooth, and minimize the lines, wrinkles, and/or folds into which it is injected. Most patients achieve optimal smoothing for approximately one year, although in some cases and areas, the duration of the effect may be shorter or longer. Supplemental treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.

How much does RADIESSE cost?

As with all fillers at Lakes Dermatology, RADIESSE is charged by the syringe. One syringe of RADIESSE is 1.5cc and costs $750.
